Memorial Day Celebration: Remembering Those Who Paid For Our Freedom
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was started shortly after the Civil War, which ended in 1865. In the few years following, Americans in various towns and cities had started holding tributes to these countless fallen soldiers in the spring. They decorated their graves with flowers and recited prayers.
Originally a day of remembrance for those lost in the Civil War, it has evolved to include all Americans who gave their lives fighting for us. It was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1971.
For many modern Americans, Memorial Day has an interesting duality to it. It is a day of remembering those who have fallen, yet it is a day to celebrate the joy and freedoms their sacrifices have allowed us to have.
Memorial Day Weekend Events
At the Resort at Canopy Oaks in Lake Wales, FL, we have a lot planned for those joining us for our Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. But in the spirit of what Memorial Day represents, we are kicking off that celebration of sacrifice and freedom with the Place a Flag event.
Friday, May 28th
- Place a Flag
At check-in, guests can purchase a flag for their campsite in memory of a loved one who served. Proceeds benefit the local Wounded Warrior Foundation. - Fire Pit Friday-Live DJ
After you are settled into your campsite, come over to the Tiki Bar on Friday evening. Enjoy a live DJ, grab a drink, dance a little, or just relax and listen to the music.
Saturday, May 29th
- Red White & Blue Kids Craft – Tie Dye, Squirt Gun Art
Join us in the morning for some patriotic-themed art projects in the Arts & Crafts building. Tie-dye shirts and squirt gun art can be fun for the whole family and provide unique souvenirs. - Lawn Games
While your tie-dye projects are drying, join us on the Clubhouse Lawn for some Gaga Ball and Giant Bowling. - Memorial Day Celebration
Art projects and lawn games can make one work up a sweat. There will be music by the pool all day so you can listen to some tunes and stay cool at the pool.The evening will feature games, food trucks, and live music from the Thick As Thieves Band from 6-10PM.
Sunday, May 30th
- Pool Party With DJ REDD
Make Sunday a fun day. Head to the pool to enjoy water slides, some Smokin’ Oaks BBQ, and a live DJ. - Live Music At The Tiki Bar
Finish off your Sunday at the Tiki Bar with a live band from 6-9PM.
